My Inspiration of Plague Doctors

Concept

My concept of my drawings having plague doctors and witches rooted from Disney movies, Harry potter and witches. When I was a kid, I was into Harry Potter and other movies that had magic beings like Disney, etc. I liked witches due to the idea have being having magic and you have spells to make an object come to life like what happened in Fantasia “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. It also didn’t help when I first watch The Owl House show and hearing witch playlist collection on YouTube. But after seeing plague doctors has a different story on why I like them, which the explanation is in the Inspiration section. Plague doctors have a mysterious aura to them. I suppose it was also the mask since it looks like a bird beak. Like what if they weren’t a human at all but a humanoid animal hiding under that outfit? The reason why I combined both plague doctor and witch idea together was that I thought it would be cool having magic but also trying to blend in the crowd. Well, I did that to my ancient characters that are bird humanoids. This is just a personal project with my best friend and we’re still working on some stories.

Why I like Plague Doctors

I like both Plague doctors and witches. Witches are easy since magic is really cool and you can control elements. I liked Harry Potter and I watched shows like Little Witch Academia, Cardcaptor Sakura, The Owl House, etc. Those shows are also the reason why I like witches and magic. But it’s hard to explain why I’m into Plague Doctors other than they look mysterious, the mask looks like a bird (and I like birds), and spooky. I did however learned about these bird mask doctors during my 2012 high school history class….Well, I had to research them on my own. I once had a teacher who was not a good at teaching lectures. All he did was give quick lecture of the topic but would go on to talk about how trashy white people are. I didn’t learn much in that class because of that. One day, he badly explains about the black plague, I was probably between the good and bad student at the time. I didn’t really pay attention whenever he would ramble about white people again as if that’s going to help anyone out on learning history. It was boring and I was just quietly sketching on my notebook because I was extremely bored out of my mind. I was tired hearing the same trashy talk. And at the exact moment I looked up, the teacher showed a picture of a historical image of a plague doctor. I think it caught my attention, teacher just gave a quick explanation with the tone of boring movie college teacher and quickly removes the image. I wanted to say “Hey wait I wanna know more of those spooky looking guys!” but he went back to his rambles and I stopped paying attention. Because of that I had to research on my own about plague doctor at home and learn on my own. After my graduation, I completely forgot about the plague doctors. But it wasn’t until the release of a game called “Hollow Knight” came out. I was thinking of a design of a character based on the game because I saw some people do it. I wanted to make a combo of a witch hat with a bird beak, and I drew the character. I was about to erase it until my best friend pointed it out that the character looked like a plague doctor with a witch hat. And I suppose that got me thinking of plague doctor again but with a hint of witches. And now I created my own plague doctor witches.

Creating my characters

I try different element for each character designs and I get some help from my best friend. There's times where I have 5 different ideas and I ask her for some advice on which design would fit more for a ice witch character. It's kind of hard to think of clothing designs for some of the elemental plague witches. It's just a personal project for me and my friend. I don't think anyone else is really interested on my drawings but its fine though (probably the reason why i stop going to deviantArt). Well, to be honest, I don't know if anyone likes my drawings. I just like drawings stuff.
